The original building, constructed in the 1850′s at the corner of of Conti and Dauphine Streets, was in the area known formerly as the red light district of New Orleans. With the booming population of sailors and tradesmen in the area, the working girls would at times find themselves with no indoor accommodations and would, at a discounted rate, toss a rug on the street and offer their services al fresco. It has been a flower stand, a barber shop, and in 1885 it was a notorious opium den run by a pair of Chinese brothers. During prohibition, the doors were padlocked by the authorities for violation of the Volstead Act. Various barrooms and nightclubs made a go at 400 Dauphine street over the years, including Clyde’s Comedy Corner in the early 80′s, where Bob Saget and Ellen Degeneres are know to have gotten their start. Remodeled and reopened before the Worlds Fair in 1984, the place was rechristened Deja Vu and has since kept the name. You can still see part of the original birch wainscoting installed then around the bar. This location (under the name Deja Vu) was where Tropical Isle, as we now call it, began. Current ownership has managed this successful restaurant and bar since 1999.
Déjà vu is now known for serving up good food and great drinks. Biscuits and gravy, two egg breakfast plates, burgers & fries, seafood po-boys, and of course Steak Night every Tuesday and Thursday are just a few of the menu items available any time you want them. With seven beers on tap and our zesty Bloody Mary, our fully stocked bar serves as a home away from home for tourists and locals alike. There are video poker machines and an internet jukebox for those who like interactive entertainment, two big screens for those looking for the night’s scores, and there’s never a shortage of people watching. This is why our motto is “Where there’s always something goin’ on!”.
